You Need Self Care to be Selfless

And no, I'm not selfish for saying that.

I didn't roll out of bed until 9am on Monday morning. My computer wasn't up and running until around 11, and I didn't feel bad about it at all. While the rest of the world was waking up early Monday morning wishing for the weekend back, I was chilling with Nola, sipping my coffee, and taking my sweet ass time.

It was a me morning that was way far over-due.

This weekend was one of those feel good weekends packed with friends and good causes. From a birthday dinner Saturday to Pitness in the Park the next day, it was definitely one that left me in smiles and a positive vibe.

But if you've never planned a fundraiser or a big event before, here's something a lot of people don't tell you.

it's fucking exhausting in the absolute best way possible.

That's just part of the reason why I let myself take it slow on Monday morning though, the main reason was a little thing called self care. It's one of those things that takes learning and time to wrap your head around. It's not something that just happens, it doesn't just dawn on you out of no where, it's a skill that comes in time and usually starts with one those "I'm good, I don't need it" attitudes until you get to that crash and burn point (which absolutely SUCKS when it happens, believe me). Self care means making time for yourself to really be with yourself.

Plain and simple, you have to find time for you. Whether it's 15 minutes a day or a full on week of relaxation, here's a few things to get your wheels spinning and figuring out how to do you.

Journaling: Grab a notebook, find your favorite pen, and just write. It doesn't even have to be about anything in particular, just let it flow.

Treat yoself: Sometimes I feel like I may do this a little too much, hence my Lulu addiction, but whatever. Lulu's, a cupcake, rescuing a dog, find something to treat yoself with and enjoy the shit out of it.

Actually allow yourself to relax: Let yourself sit down for 5-10 minutes and don't feel bad about it, enjoy it instead.

Put your phone down: Social media, although a lot of the time helpful, is a huge cause of stress especially when it comes to internal feelings and relationships. Give yourself a phone curfew and get the F off it.

Take a nap: Apparently naps improve your memory by 33% and they're freaking awesome, need I say more?

Find an activity that you truly enjoy: Make it part of your routine whether it's a new fitness class or rescuing puppies (yes, I'm saying this again on purpose), throw it into your weekly routine.

Find your zen: There's absolutely no denying that Yoga is one of the main keys to self awareness and care. Even if you've never taken a class before and you think it's bullshit, just try it once. Or do some mindful meditation on your own.

With the holidays coming up, this self care aspect of life is going to become even more important, so try to figure and get your wheels turning before then.
